A membership to your family doctor?!

In this age of soaring healthcare costs, copays, long wait times, short visits, and impersonal experiences with your family doctor, Direct Primary Care offers both patients and doctors respite from the machine that has become medicine in the US. Direct Primary Care, let’s just shorten it and call it DPC, offers physicians and patients alike an opportunity to build a relationship much like the concept of the “small-town family doctor” we used to see on TV shows like “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” and “Northern Exposure.”

DPC is a relatively new concept/practice model. Many people have heard about “concierge medicine,” where folks who can afford it pay a large annual fee, plus expenses for “extras.” It sounds utopic in theory, having a doctor at your disposal, but is unattainable for most of us. We all deserve to have time with our doctor, to form a trusting doctor-patient relationship, and to have someone work with us towards our best version of ourselves AND to have it affordable and attainable.

Direct Primary Care offers us something similar to that concierge model with a more reasonable cost. Patients pay a monthly membership fee, which covers most everything they will need, and in return have access to their doctor and services in a much more accessible way. DPC practices are springing up everywhere across the country and have been growing in number in Northern Colorado.

DPC IS GOOD FOR BOTH PATIENTS AND PHYSICIANS!

As a family doctor, I have enjoyed the flexibility and freedom running a DPC provides. I can spend as much or as little time with my patients that they need/want, I can chat with them while they have a facial (we do aesthetics too!), or can send them a quick note on the portal to check-in. They are able to text/call/email me 24/7 and don’t have to go through multiple people to get a message to me – they have me!

During this COVID crisis and facing a “new normal” in our society, the difference between Direct Primary Care and traditional big groups/insurance driven practices, has been apparent. We have been able to tailor each patient’s care to fit their individual needs to keep them safe and healthy. The pandemic has created a whole host of new challenges for people and having our little practice has made it possible to adapt and help our patients when they need it most.

We intend to keep our practice small so we don’t fall into the same trap that mainstream offices have. We want to keep costs for our patients manageable while still keeping the doors of our small business open- that is the DPC way!

Keeping doctoring “real” like this is good for both the physician AND the patients!
